Make sure your pooch is getting enough exercise. Often adequate exercise is a big part of calming down a rambunctious dog, particularly with adolescent dogs. What's adequate exercise? Check with your vet first, especially if you have a growing dog whose joints and bones need special care. One rule of thumb says 20 minutes of aerobic exercise twice daily. That means fetch or walking/jogging that's brisk enough to elicit panting. A smaller, less active dog may do fine with indoor fetch. But if you have a breed that was designed to herd livestock or hunt all day long, for example, then your dog may need over an hour of running a day to fit sanely into your life. Consider hiring a dog walker or enrolling in doggie daycare. Provide mental exercise as well: teaching a trick or brushing up on obedience exercises can help calm an active dog. |
